ISO 50001 is an energy management standard that helps businesses establish and implement energy management systems (EnMS) to help manage and reduce energy use and costs within the business.
A recognised UK standard based on the ISO model system of continual improvement guides businesses in improving their quality and environmental management. ISO 50001 can help any size of business to become more resilient, reduce costs, meet legislation requirements and increase sustainability.
What is ISO 50001?
ISO 50001 is an international standard for Energy Management systems designed to assist businesses and organizations in implementing processes and procedures for efficient energy management. By incorporating ISO 50001, businesses can enhance their overall quality and environmental management.
The standard offers a framework to:
1. Develop a policy aimed at using energy more efficiently.
2. Set objectives and targets aligned with the policy.
3. Utilize data to gain insights into energy usage and make informed decisions.
4. Measure and analyze the outcomes of energy management efforts.
5. Regularly review the effectiveness of the policy.
6. Continuously improve energy management practices.
While ISO 50001 certification is not mandatory, achieving it demonstrates a commitment to enhancing energy performance and sustainability. It also communicates this dedication to suppliers, third parties, and customers, fostering trust and showcasing a company’s commitment to sustainability.

History of ISO 50001
The history of ISO 50001 traces back to 2007 when the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) urged for a global response to climate change. In response, ISO was tasked with developing an international energy management standard.
A committee, led by ISO members such as ABNT (Brazil), SAC (China), and the BSI Group (UK), was formed to develop the standard. Assistance from the Department of Energy (DoE) and US CEEM was instrumental in this process. The result was the publication of ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management Systems – Requirements with Guidance in June 2011.
In 2018, ISO released a revised and updated version of ISO 50001 with the aim of encouraging more small and medium-sized businesses and organizations to adopt the standard. ISO 50001:2018 also allowed for the integration of multiple management standards, such as ISO 14001 and ISO 9001, which served as models for ISO 50001.
ISO 50001 Requirements
To achieve ISO 50001 certification, businesses and organizations must implement the recommended framework, which involves developing and maintaining various procedures and processes. These include:
- Compliance: Understanding and complying with relevant legal obligations related to energy management.
- Cost: Identifying energy usage and waste to implement effective controls and manage energy consumption.
- Perception: Demonstrating credibility and ethics to stakeholders through an internationally recognized standard.
- Reputation: Showing a commitment to reducing environmental impact and implementing best practices.
- Risk management: Reducing reliance on fossil fuel-based energy sources, mitigating risks related to availability and price fluctuations.
